Sen. Turner Reacts to Governor’s Budget Address
Cities 92.9
Tom Davis
02/03/2022
‘State Senator Sally Turner (R-Beason) released the following statement in response to the Governor’s Budget Address: “Although there are parts of the Governor’s proposed budget that sound great, such as increases for public safety, a much-needed crime lab facility in Decatur, and human service increases to address mental health issues, I have serious concerns about its sustainability. This budget contains a continuous state operational increase of roughly $2.5 billion. After the federal stimulus money is spent and federal assistance programs end, I fear the same problems that our state’s finances have been plagued by for years will occur once again.’

However, Governor Pritzker’s budget pairs temporary tax relief with permanent spending increases, while relying heavily on one-time federal COVID revenues. ‘“The Senate Republicans have been here, calling on our colleagues across the aisle to work with us, to listen to us, to listen to the men and women combating this crime rate first hand,” Senate Minority Leader Dan McConchie (R-Hawthron Woods) said. “If they don’t listen to us, then they should at least listen to people throughout the state that are begging for an end to the violence.”’

Researchers estimate that following Cook County’s implementation of its so-called bail reform, the number of defendants charged with committing new crimes increased by 45 percent.”’
